"But AMD knew they held pocket Aces, so that's when you DO bet the farm."

Maybe. But compared to when the Colonel ran things, it was a safe, pat bet. Jerry was strictly high stakes. And lucky to boot. Don't ever discount luck.

Magrathea, Where would AMD be without the x86-64 backwards compatible 64-bit ISA?

AMD's 64-bit extensions represented the natural evolution of x86 that Intel chose not to pursue until AMD was already there. Since Intel decided to "bet the farm" on Itanium instead, it was only a natural choice for AMD, especially when most of the industry demanded it.

Where would AMD be if HTX was not received well by OEMs and the market?

HyperTransport would have happened no matter what. AMD just decided to open it up and embrace development partnerships with OEMs. That's betting the farm?

Where would AMD be if MOBO manufacturers didn't support Opteron for servers?

Like I said, AMD made incremental gains with Opteron in order to gain credibility. They did not "bet the farm" on Opteron. That suggests "all or nothing," and nothing in Opteron's entire history suggests that. AMD did a great job pushing Opteron into all segments of servers, but none of those efforts represented life-or-death efforts (except in a very macro sense).

Anyway, I feel like I spent too much time arguing over the nuanced definition of "bet the farm."
