AMD's 64-bit extensions represented the natural evolution of x86 that Intel chose not to pursue until AMD was already there. Since Intel decided to "bet the farm" on Itanium instead, it was only a natural choice for AMD, especially when most of the industry demanded it.

I believe Intel had an alternative x86 instruction set but MicroSoft refused to support it. That was the payoff for Jerry's testimony in the anti trust trial.
