"Methane bubbling up from permafrost alarms some experts "

I've never been one of the "sky is falling" guys, but if the sky WERE to fall, this might be one way it would happen. Methane is a much more powerful greenhouse gas than Co2, and if enough were released into the atmosphere, it could cause a self-re-enforcing state change on the Earth. Warming would cause the release of MORE methane, which would cause MORE warming, and round and round.

We'd have no way of stopping it, and Earth might become nearly as hot as Venus. Temperatures on the plains of Venus often reach 850 degrees Fahrenheit.
