Eight women from CFB Petawawa -- two of whom have husbands currently serving in Afghanistan -- have won $5 million in a lottery.

Eight women from CFB Petawawa have won $5 million in a lottery.
It was a needed moment of good fortune for a base that recently lost five soldiers, all of them killed in Afghanistan during the Labour Day long weekend.

Cheryl Coates' husband Neil is one of those serving in the war-torn country.

"I got a phone call from him late Saturday night," she told CTV Newsnet. "He asked me what it was that I wanted.

"I said, 'I just wanted to tell you we won some money'. He said really, how much, and I said $5 million between eight of us. And then from there, it was like, 'Oh my God, wow'," she said.

"It was just wonderful to hear his voice."

A one-eighth share of $5 million is $625,000. The women appeared in Toronto on Tuesday to pick up their ceremonial cheque.

Coates said she hasn't really thought about how to spend the money, but said she will likely help one son who is attending university in New Brunswick.

Other than that, she'll likely just lock the money up until Neil rotates back home in February 2007 so they can decide together.

"I'm hoping we'll make some of the money work for us ... we were never interested in buying a house because we were always in army quarters, but we just might."

One woman, who is just finishing her maternity leave, said her 10-month-old girl will have "a different life."

Coates said she hopes the lottery win will help lift spirits at CFB Petawawa, after the deaths of Warrant Officer Richard Nolan, Warrant Officer Frank Mellish, Sgt. Shane Stachnik, Pte. William Cushley and Pte. Mark Graham.

"It's been a hard, hard time, you know, when the lads left and then to hear what had happened and that," Cheryl Coates told The Canadian Press.

"There were sad faces walking around, especially as the military community, but we helped put a smile on their faces for a bit and forget about what's going on."

Their winning ticket was for the Sept. 8 Lotto Super 7.

Aside from Coates, the other lucky women are Karen Chaput, Bobbi-Ann Davis, Rachel Desroche, Marilyn Cheeseman, Jennifer Rhoads, Claudette Robinson and Janice Larade.

The total prize was $10 million, but there was another winning ticket in the same draw.

You make a point that the delegitimization the Muslim cause is the way to go.. . My comment wrt to Layton and the liked post is simply to ask HOW.. do you suggest we do that... You must think it is a good idea since you propose it... as opposed to the current strategy...

Since the current strategy is getting nowhere, delegimitization is an option that should be explored for whatever it may be worth.

It appears that Bush has started the ball rolling in Saudi Arabia by stating US forces will be withdrawn from that country.

Someone once asked me what was the best way to make peace with the Muslims. My stock answer was addressing their claims and delegitimizing them. He disagreed and insisted that terror and humiliation will teach the Muslim bastards, ragheads and turbanheads who is boss and they will buckle under. He insisted that terrorising the Muslims and humiliating them, big-time, was the only way to go. That was way back in early 2002 not long after 9/11.

Well, as events have shown heretofore, that strategy failed miserably. The destruction of mosques, Abou Ghraib tortures, total destruction of Fallujah and the murder of women and children and use of white phosphorus bombs & etc & etc failed to subdue the Muslims. On the contrary, it turned out that the acts of terrorism and humiliation only fueled ongoing Muslim anger and resistance.

By the way, Deepak Chopra told the Dalai Lama today that he (Chopra) and his buddies have interviewed a total of about 600,000 Muslims worldwide with regard to what they thought was the underlying cause of the anger and hatred of the Muslims towards the west. Almost to a man they spontaneously replied, "Exploitation and humiliation." They said that while they could forgive the exploitation over time, they doubt if they could forget and forgive the humiliation by the west.

So, to return to delegitimization, the above finding of Chopra and his fellow researchers should be taken into consideration and dealt with in negotiations with the Muslims.
