Not so many years ago, Iran was a remarkably progressive place, except of course for the brutal dictator who was our "ally" -- the Shah of Iran. We loved our ally and showered him with billions of dollars in weapons to use against his own people. Strangely, the Iranian people did not like us doing that, nor did they much care for the dictator. At that point we lost all influence and they managed to find a guy who stayed in power largely by reminding people how much they hated us for supporting the Shah. We played a central role in creating the Iran that you see today. As we speak we are doing the same thing in Saudi Arabia.
