Lam Research (LRCX) : Reiterates 2 STARS (sell)
Analyst: David Kaplan

In an analysis of semiconductor equipment companies, we modified price/book value metrics to remove the effects of net cash. Looking at ratios of enterprise value to book value less net cash, some companies with big cash balances trade out of line with peers. LRCX's modified P/BV of 7.6X is nearly double peers at 3.9X. Its shares trade at $42.37, or 4.3X BV of $9.85. Removing its net cash of $4.94/share implies the core business is being valued at $37.43, or 7.6X $4.91 book value less net cash. While this is only one metric, we think it supports our target price of $35.

Fastest-Growing Companies: Lam Research ranks No. 54
Thursday September 21, 10:01 am ET

Lam Research ranks no. 54 on Fortune's 2006 list of the 100 Fastest-Growing Companies. The Fremont, California-based company saw profits rise at a rate of 256% and revenues grow 32% with a stock return of 37% on average annually over the past three years.

Each year, Fortune's ranking of Fastest-Growing Companies provides a snapshot of America's economy, and this year the picture is drenched in oil. Last year 18 energy firms cracked the top 100 - up from four in 2000. Now more than a third of the roster - 34 companies - are in the energy biz.

But oil is hardly the whole story. Computer and biotech firms make their usual strong showing. Catering to Americans' obsession with how they look (and how well they see) has been remarkably lucrative: LCA-Vision, a laser surgery provider, lands at no. 5, followed closely by Palomar Medical Technologies, which makes laser devices used in cosmetic skin treatments.

This year, just two homebuilders made the cut: Toll Brothers at No. 98 and Meritage Homes at No. 99. Last year there were four homebuilders and two land developers on the list.

Fortune's 100 Fastest-Growing Companies list is an annual ranking of U.S. companies by three-year growth in sales, profits and total return that meet key criteria for sales, profit and market capitalization size and sales and profit growth.

Companies on this year's list include: Yahoo, Sonic Solutions, Digital River, Valueclick, and Cognizant Technology Solutions.

In other analyst moves, Lam Research rose 2.5% to $42.38 in pre-open trading after CIBC World Markets upgraded the semiconductor equipment maker to sector outperformer from sector performer, citing continuing strength in the dynamic random access memory market.
