In this case, Gallup (a commercial corporation) was paid by their client, Baylor University.

Who knows? What good will ANYTHING do? Impossible to say.

"Will it be meaningful to mankind?"

Well... the poll was of the USA, (not of 'mankind', which would be a bit bigger), but, yes, I suppose that to whatever extent it expands the understanding of beliefs and attitudes in America (most important country in the world, at this point in history) it could be "meaningful to mankind".

"And finally, what difference will it make?"

What difference does ANY knowledge make? Only the future knows that. (Still... given my druthers, I'd prefer to have knowledge instead of absence of knowledge....)
