Higher CAFE standards, punishing companies, and national health care would all have a very negative effect on the US economy.

As for US manufacturing jobs they have been declining as a percentage of the work force for generations, mostly because of higher productivity. We produce more than we used to but it takes less people to do it.

The main reason Japan beats us in the oil business is the perception that there cars are higher quality and generally are better designed. You can agree with that perception or argue that its false but even if it is false the perception effects the sales.
