Maybe it is because ordinary playing cards (as distinct from Tarot cards) are also used by some psychics (and charlatans) for divination.

Any form of divination, according to organised Christian religion, is considered a pagan practice and is therefore verboten.

Playing cards is considered a sin by some, even if you're not gambling.

There were a lot of people who wouldn't play cards when I was a kid. Enough that there was always a courtesy question before bringing out the cards. Sort of like asking "do you mind if I smoke" before lighting up. Enough that when I was little I always felt a bit like I was doing something wrong when I played cards. I was probably in high school before the little voice went away.

I haven't seen that since. I'd forgotten about it until you mentioned it.
