Asia checks support their positive semiconductor capital equipment industry thesis; favors VSEA, LRCX, and AMAT - Thomas Weisel

Thomas Weisel says Asia checks support their positive semiconductor capital equipment industry thesis. Firm's meetings in Asia this week increased their confidence in the 1H07 outlook for semiconductor equipment orders and leave them more bullish on semiconductor capital stocks. Firm says while they observe evidence of ongoing demand concerns in consumer and PC end markets, the outlook for equipment orders in 1H07 remains a memory-driven story. Firm observed that capacity ramp plans in each of the DRAM and NAND segments reflect high levels of memory vendor confidence around bit growth trends in 2007. Firm says aggressive strategic investment into memory capacity appears on track to be stronger and continue longer than they believe is reflected in semiconductor capital stocks. Firm expects fab equipment vendors to enjoy healthy near-term order trends relative to packaging and test equipment vendors. Within the wafer fab equipment group, firm favors vendors with above-average market share in memory (VSEA, LRCX) as well as vendors with growing market share within the memory segment (AMAT).
