"it was considered a given that the Geneva Conventions be followed to the letter and in its spirit. "

Sure, that was all we needed, until Bush. Bush also invaded a country that hadn't attacked us first. He's taken the nation in a very ugly direction, and shame is that he gets the support he does while he does it. With the proper setup and fearmongering, it CAN happen here - unless we put a stop to it.

I wouldn't be so sure that things like torture didn't happen before. Don't forget the internet has changed a lot of things......people get info much faster, info that's more comprehensive and they get it more directly than ever before. Two clear changes caused by the net: the way blogs influenced the Lamont/Lieberman race. The other is the way the US media has become more aggressive and confrontative than they were in the first few years of the Bush administration. And I think that's because the Brit. media was scooping them and making them look foolish......and Americans began reading them more frequently.

Ten years ago, I rarely read the Brit. papers. Then during the first years of the Bush administration, I began to read them almost exclusively because they were the only true source of the truth. The writing was on the wall for the American media.

So to go back to your original premise, before there was any competition for the American consumer, do you really think the American media would report bad doings on the part of the US? Oh sure, occasionally, they would 'uncover' some brouhaha but not with any real frequency. I keep remembering the NY Times correspondent who was wired into the White House and how she pushed for the war. I have a strong feeling that that kind of garbage happened a lot. I think the Web has made them more honest and more competitive.
