There are hundreds of programs for the mac and apple that let you rip CDs into mp3 format.

In fact, windows media player will do it. The resulting mp3 file has no DRM whatsoever. People can take those mp3s and distribute them over p2p networks to as many people as they want and microsoft doesn't do anything to stop them.

microsoft hasnt caved into the music industry and made it impossible to rip CDs with windows, so why would they with zune?

can't imagine that Microsoft would develop and market a system that allows people to copy songs from CDs and then distribute them all over the place as many times as they want. The record companies would have a fit.
