torture

epa lying, directed from the White house, that will result in probably thousands of premature deaths

domestic spying by the fed govt

DHS thuggery

Stifling academic freedom

disappearing people

detention centers with no recourse

secret prisons for suspects

10s of thousands of innocents killed in unnecessary wars that make those in power and money more powerful and richer

'signing statements' that amount to virtual dictatorship

endless fear mongering from our govt to make us all more subserviant

Did I leave anything out? No doubt.

We have complete psychopaths running this country doing the most ungodly things but we have to stop short of considering a significant likelihood of just a single example of how ungodly they are?

But sticking with the smoke for a while, my work in BP Oil used to involve what happens to fuel after it goes through an engine. What comes out is a chemical stew, commonly called "smoke".

Bingo.. if it's anything, it's the particulates that may have been breathed in due to either removing masks (because they are hot). There was a tremendous amount of asbestos and other materials that were pulverized. And asbestos, as we now know, resembles barbed wire when viewed under the microscope, and will definitely tear up a set of lungs.

Hell, I quit smoking just recently and I've coughing and hacking more NOW, than I was when I smoked. It's just the process of my body eliminating all of that accumulated crud I inhaled into my lungs for years.

Were these illnesses due to a chemical cause, it would impact more than just the lungs, IMO.

And Doug's contention that workers were told not to wear their masks is ridiculous. I can't imagine a Union Representative around that would permit anyone to "demand" that their workers not wear protective gear.

There's some funny stuff going on with the statistics on respiratory health after 9/11.

The recently released (August 2006) report examines lung function in "first responders," that is, NYPD firemen.
ncbi.nlm.nih.gov

For reasons which escape me, this narrow study is being extrapolated to all people living in NY. Well, I assume the reasons are the usual ones, mass hysteria, paranoia, demonization of "the other" ("George Bush is out to get us"), etc.
