Hawk, I've worked in hot conditions, including in dirty air conditions. I'm more inclined to take my shirt off and leave breathing filters on if it's too hot. Wearing shorts is a good move too.

Eye, ear and breathing protection are fundamental in a lot of jobs, even if they are hot.

I checked temperatures in New York [though not the actual days after the actual destruction]. brooklyn.about.com They are not too bad, for the most part. I dare say a LOT of people around the world are wearing breathing equipment in a LOT hotter conditions.

Asbestosis is a long-run problem causing a particular lung failure. People worked for years with the occupational hazard and survived a LOT longer than 5 years. At the Twin Towers site, it was a matter of weeks that there was a lot of smoke, not years and the numbers of people were small.

I don't believe anyone is dying of what they inhaled during Twin Towers rubble removal if they were always non-smokers. Perhaps some people already in trouble from their cigarettes are tipped over the edge by the smoke and dust from the rubble removal, but I'd be surprised even at that.

They had surely heard of spraying dusty work sites with water to keep it down. They had breathing equipment.
