It was a LOT more than good manners. Same in China, though not so terrified. They were more like totally disciplined to obedience without question.

Absolutely!!

Which is why I'm a bit disappointed with TJ's view on China. Although I guess I can understand why he's so hesitant to criticize his own government's unwillingness to adopt democratic reforms. He doesn't want to be kicked off his "money rock" and land in a Chinese prison.

And of course, we cannot expect China to promote such dangerous concepts as democracy in the locations where it conduct business.. Indeed, that's probably what its business partners find so attractive about it.. "Bejing won't butt into our internal affairs and wax melodic about democratic reforms.. They'll just support us and help us maintain power".

Seems this was similar to US policy in decades past and look where support to such dictators has gotten us?

Of course, I guess the world has higher "expectations" of how the US conducts itself in the world.

They certainly don't seem to have those same expectations of China..
