Someone at Glass House in Dearborn has an unnatural love for the Land/Range Rover. They are problem vehicles at this point with few people that truly know how to repair them. Dump the marque instead of buying the name. Stupid waste of money indeed.

Count the cars at Il Posto, or Franklin Racquet or downtown Birmingham on any weekend. You will see a lot of BMWs and Mercedes, etc, etc. We always had a Lincoln for "state" occasions when I lived there, as did everyone else. A friend who has always kept a Cadillac around finally abandoned the pretense about 5 years ago.

Our BMW's did just fine in the winter. My MBG was another story. Crappy Smith electricals.

Land Rover/ Jaguar are a mess. Have a friend who has owned a fun Range for two months now. 7 weeks in the shop. Two replacements of the headliners later, she had about a gallon of water pour down on her when she came to a stop during a driving rain. Ford would do well to dump this marque. MP

mish,

Yes, a stupid waste of money for yet another brand they do not need and cannot afford.

Ford needs to DUMP these marque brands and get their focus back on the bread-and-butter Ford brand. When the Japanese start taking real share in the work-duty trucks, the game will be over.

Aston Martin? Stupid. Ford GT? Stupid again. The list of stupid at Ford is a long, long list.

Junior renovated the Rouge Plant, per the list below.

Advanced environmental concepts applied and tested at the complex include:

• The world's largest ecologically inspired living roof—about 500,000 square feet—dramatically affects the Rouge area watershed by holding several inches of rainfall

• Phytoremediation—the use of natural plants throughout the grounds rids soil of contaminants

• Swales—shallow green ditches seeded with indigenous plants improve storm-water management

• Porous paving filters water through retention beds with two to three feet of compacted stones, helping manage storm-water runoff

• Trellises for flowering vines and other plants to shade and help cool the Rouge Office building and the new assembly plant

• Renewable energy sources such as solar cells and fuel cells

• Planting more than 1,500 trees and thousands of other plantings to attract songbirds and create habitats

Those are the "good works" of Junior. Someone should tell Junior that his product uses something called an internal combustion engine. He should have been really, really focusing on alternative energy powerplants instead of pissing in the ocean with the installation of "trellises for flowering vines". F-Trucks and Expeditions were selling pretty good for a while there, so I guess it didn't seem really important <g>

The millions of sunflowers planted in Dearborn were nice to look at. I guess Junior really wants to be a farmer, or maybe Van Gogh.

The Rover name is a good name to have in Europe and especially in the U.K. In Europe, with the exception of Jaguar at the high end, Ford has no premium positioning for its regular line a la Toyota/Lexus. The Mercury brand does not exist there and it wouldn't be useful.

Ford has lost a lot of prestige in Europe and it would likely cost them a lot more to build up a new premium branding strategy rather than purchase the Rover name. The Rover name in Europe/U.K. denotes sedan elegance and is not closely associated with Land Rover.
