I have another reason not to go back to Steamboat, but it's personal and has nothing to do with the Mountain. Just some bad mojo:

Over Labor Day I was riding my dirt bike in the Hahn's Peak area (30 miles N of Steamboat) and crashed. Broke my scapula, three ribs and one of the ribs shattered and punctured my lung and it collapsed. It took search and rescue 6 hours to find me and get me to a hospital (and get some morphine). Although I wasn't riding alone and had full gear on, I still took a beating.

Did the chest tube thing and spent 2 1/2 days at the Steamboat hospital, cost: over $6k.

Back in Denver the lung deflated again, new chest tube and another 3 days in the hospital. Haven't seen that bill yet. Finally after 10 days, my lung decided to stay inflated, now I'm just dealing with the broken bones.

I guess I'm lucky that I didn't hurt myself worse and that I will be healed by the time ski season rolls around. I'm selling the bike and closing that chapter....I'm sticking to something way more safer: Skiing!

BTW, the medical establishment is one big fleecing operation. They fleece the insurance companies by way of crazy inflated costs and the insurance companies pass that along to the premuim-payers. Inflation anybody? I even brought my own percocet in from a Pharmacy and the hospital still had to charge me for the nurse's time to give me the pill!! Come'on! I only had a catastrophic insurance policy so I was out $9k for the deductable and looking to shave costs. Forgetaboutit, they have no interest in saving money for anyone.

Luckily, I still have some $$$ left over for new boots this season.....
