BA degree is the new High School diploma. It's the calling card that gets you in the door. If you tell a kid not to waste his time in college you are telling him he should aim for a career in the exciting world of flipping burgers.

I used to speak at a career day at our local high school explaining how the trades and apprenticeship worked. Finally gave up. Guidance counselors have programmed kids that would be marginal candidates for an apprenticeship that they need to go to college. Between that and the totally unreal expectations of the kids led me to believe it was a waste of my afternoon. Frumpy little girls signing up to go to modeling school or my all time favorite the kid who asked me if he had to be good in math to be a sheetmetal worker. When I told him all of our layout is geometry he stated that he wouldn't be able to be a sheetmetal worker then. When I asked him later what he was going to be he told me an airline pilot. Unreal. Can't be a sheetmetal worker because he can't pass math but he's going to be an airline pilot. That's the one that made me realize I was wasting my time.
