"this is the most expensive "ally" we have and the policies of the bush admin clearly the most one sided, american_interests adverse in memory...." With allies like Israel, we'll NEVER lack for enemies! Actually, there IS a historical precedent. Our support of Chaing kai Shek in Taiwan. That was a loser from the get go, never had a chance, and kept us from developing relations with China for fifty years.

The Christian Right, with tens of millions of followers and a major base of support for the Republican Party, has thrown its immense media and political clout in support for Ariel Sharon and other right-wing Israeli leaders. Based in part on a messianic theology that sees the ingathering of Jews to the Holy Land as a precursor for the second coming of Christ, the battle between Israelis and Palestinians is, in their eyes, simply a continuation of the battle between the Israelites and the Philistines, with God in the role of a cosmic real estate agent who has deemed that the land belongs to Israel alone--secular notions regarding international law and the right of self-determination notwithstanding. They also think the Israelis will do a better job of protecting Christian artifacts. That's why Delay went over there two years ago. I can remember him saying.......whatever Israel wants from the US, he will make sure they get it. I guess he meant not as a congressman but as a lobbyist. <g>
