Interesting piece, thanks. Since we don't have the equivalent of a genuine middle party between the two major players, he identifies an important problem.

But he doesn't address how both major parties had long reigns to recruit the swing voters to their cause permanently and failed. There is no ruling majority for liberals or conservatives. They win 50.x% and implement part of their agenda periodically, then recede back to the wilderness.

I am not sure which option is better.

"There Is No Vital Center

Fascinating piece. There is some with which to quarrel but I agree with the overall positioning of the piece. That is that there is no "centrist philosophy" per se, at least none available in this country at this moment that would serve as the basis for a political movement.

It's hard to make an argument, however, that it's about individualism; but it's certainly right on point to argue that it's a temperament rather than a political philosophy with a movement.

The biggest flaw is the assertion that the "left is "rooted" in Marxism." But that's an argument for another day.

Reminds me of Yeats: obviously not much has changed...

Turning and turning in the widening gyre
The falcon cannot hear the falconer;
Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere
The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
The best lack all conviction, while the worst
Are full of passionate intensity.
