American resolve began to falter the day the White House decided to divert its attention from the steps so badly needed to address terrorism and instead shift our efforts towards a completely unrelated political agenda to invade Iraq. From then on we lost our way -- and now it is hard to see any way to get back on track.

In each of America's adventures into war, the anti-war group has eventually persuaded the American public to lose the war.

Not "each" but several, for sure

Korea, Viet nam, Cuba, Iran, Iraq. Every area that the US used or should have used a military solution, the US has lost, and now it will lose in Iraq for the second time. Islam has a foothold in the US, I believe Islam is reaching for control of Border crossings on Native reserves, and can cross without interference from the US into Canada or from Canada into the US. The American Public will be speaking of conversion long before the American Public realises the attack is on. Islam is already growing quickly in Canada, and Canadian Authorities have no interest in anything that seems like interference in Muslim Affairs. Islam is talking of building a huge Mosque in London and other countries will soon be on their lists.

"The Americans who laugh and jeer at patriotism and resolve were silent that day."

All Americans, and the entire WORLD were for getting and punishing those responsible. The man responsible is still free. But then, the chimp Nero decided to divert us into Iraq, for a complex of reasons that have not been admitted to this day. A war that has squandered the goodwill of the entire WORLD.

THAT's the war we are all against. The WRONG war, the illegal war, the war of aggression against a country that had not attacked us, and did not threaten us. A country that we had firmly under control. A war we were misled into with fear-mongering, half truths and lies by a "leader" who should be impeached for having done so.

Good post CB. Leadership is another factor. If you go back to US entry into WW2, you will find strong isolationist anti war sentiment. FDR became president in that environment and gradually prepared us for war. TG for Pearl Harbor because if that hadnt happened, we may have ultimately waited too long.
9/11 was Pearl Harbor in our time. Afganistan had 90%+ support. But the bush admin/neocons and folks like me either went off in the wrong direction or failed to understand what iraq entailed and whether the fruit was as low hanging as they thought. The example that iraq was going to be both for the efficiency of american power projection in the regions as well as for growth of democracy in the region, didnt materialize. And the bushies keep pushing the same stay the course message when it is very unclear as to what that course is or should be. FDR, bush was not, nor reagan who knew how to regroup and change course where necessary.
I think itchy is too itchy to blame the american people when this current quagmire has far more to do with misguided and/or incompetent leadership from the top down.
