you got it. Reason iraq seemed so attractive--as low hanging fruit was because of the ease of the Kosovo operation. And the war itself, though not as easy was a walkover. Problem was that the serbs had deep misgivings about their leadership and milosevec either couldnt or wouldnt mount an opposition to the american attack. Serb people moved seamlessly into a more democratic mode. Euros have a demo gene in their past and arabs just do not. Serbs can fight like hell but dont engage in terrorism for the most part. Serbs are christian and not islamic maniacs of the bin laden variety, nor were their any baath equivalent movement. And most importantly serbia has a homogenous population and not sunnis, shiaa and kurds. Their renegade province (kosovo) was also mostly homogenous and like kurdistan was able to stand on their own. Anyway folks like hackworth and buchanan back then predicted body bags from serbia and they were dead wrong. Bush, the repubs and most dems learned the wrong lesson from that episode i am afraid. That was my downfall as well in supporting iraq war when i was for the most part against the Kosovo action.
