The Syrians? Fighting for their freedom from America?

I think the assertion is that Syrian and Iranian support for both the Iraqi militants, and Hizbullah is equivalent to French support to the American patriots..

Of course, it's certainly in the self-interest of Syria and Iran to support any anti-western group in those two countries.. And certainly if it provides them the ability to claim the lead in destroying those "nasty Jews" (because isn't it all a Zionist conspiracy from their perspective??).

Certainly the French had no real stake in American democracy.. They just wanted to weaken the British grip on N. America with the view that the new American country would naturally come under France's sphere of influence.
