In addition, going to war offers no guarantee that those things will be preserved. Or maybe you missed the torture scandals, the no wmd scandal, the cost overruns and financial corruption scandals, the dead civilians all over Iraq horrors, and the images of getting our asses handed to us by a ragtag bunch of fighters hiding among an Iraqi population that shields them? What has fighting this fool's war in Iraq done to preserve our "honor, prestige and credibility?

One of the things no one has done is look at how the Iraqi's see this. There were what about 60 Iraqis found bound tortured and murdered yesterday. Iraqis believe in torture. Saddam did it, and the new government does it, and the Iraqi Militias do it. Stop doing it if you want, it isn't seemly, but stop bashing your self because you did. The American tortures were silly and not nearly what real torture involves. You might want to look at the chain of command however, that low levels had that much unsupervised power speaks about a breakdown of significant proportions.

OTOH start doing what you do best, where there is peace, renovate, make it spectacular, make it convenient, air condition it. Televise it.Get the Army corps of engineers to make the homes wherever there is peace into a little piece if Iraqi heaven, and show Iraqis that you are doing it. Pictures in all the papers on TV. Do it so every Muslim Wife whose Husband mentions Jihad sleeps alone tomorrow night.

Every member of our military is a volunteer. If they were draftees, I'd buy your argument that we shouldn't support military intervention unless we go ourselves.

I can't remember for sure but it seems like I remember you served in Viet Nam. If so, was that as a draftee or as a volunteer? I've noticed that a lot of men who were drafted to serve in Viet Nam now want everybody else to be subjected to compulsory military service.

As for me, I doubt the military would want me. I'm over 50, fat, flat footed, myopic, have rheumatoid arthritis, and Type 2 diabetes.

What I do is work, raise kids, pay taxes, vote, volunteer in civic associations, and donate money to worthy causes, including a group of American military stationed in Iraq that builds schools.

Maybe you'd rather live in a country where only soldiers, sailors, and marines can vote. If so, you may not like living in America.
