I'll try and make my answer more plain for you to understand.

For the debate to proceed to it's correct solution (i.e. a more correct understanding of the climate) it would be better if Exxon, Phillip Morris et al remained aloof to the debate.

If the contrary case is true, i.e. the climate is not changing significantly, and any human contribution to greenhouse gases is negligible, (the scientific consensus is that we are warming and human contribution is significant) you can rest assured that some aspiring scientist will take on the challenge and prove the science. Take Einstein for example, everyone thought time dilation was just crazy.

Having the guys wearing bowler hats and sitting in plush offices trying to influence the debate just makes it more difficult. It doesn't matter if they are capitalists or ardent commies.

Please leave out how some climate change denier had his speech ignored, or didn't make professor. Like that doesn't go on, all the time, on every subject in the academic world.
