I'm sorry. You originally wrote that "ANY government tax and spending does harm." I presume the "harm" is that taxes are moneys that could be applied elsewhere?

By that logic ANY expenditure causes some harm.


There is indeed an opportunity cost for any expenditure. Government revenue is somewhat different than other spending choices. For one taxes aren't a choice, the government takes the money from you. It moves the money away from the realm of personal decisions as to spending and investment and instead imposes a political decision as to how the money will be used.

You have complete control over your grocery bill. You can choose to live in a condo with dues or not. You have only the most tenuous control over how much in taxes you pay and how they are spent.
