i have worked for myself for most of my life, or in jobs that didn't involve contact with employees, or bosses so I really don't know.

Look at sexual harrassment in the work place. Employers have infinite power over their employees. All major companies have human resource directors writing codes of conduct about what people can say to each other during work. The people that ignore these codes of conduct don't last very long.

Law makers are the equivalent of CEO's of small corporations, except they have no one looking over their shoulder. The time value of the corporation is directly linked to the length of time the staff can keep their candidate in office. They are all working to promote the same cover up. If they can't find the right spin, the whole office is out of a job. A new political candidate replaces the disgraced politician who brings in a whole new staff. Everyone on Foley's staff will be soon receiving the pink slip.

Working for a politician relies on teamwork, whereas employment sector is dog eat dog competition. Everyone in political office uses spin and damage control to keep the golden boy in office. Not so in corporate employment where the guy that gets fired is replaced by the person in the next office. I would argue that competition for better jobs keeps everyone more honest in an employment environment.

In Senator Foley's office, no one gets promoted to replace him when he fucks up. I think that is one of the biggest reasons why politicians are so twisted by their power. Everyone goes around pretending that these egomaniacs are good people. I have never witnessed a person with a decent thing to say about the Congressman for whom they were working.
