I agree with that general principle.

I wouldn't apply it universally, for example I think patents for new inventions are ok even though they are government granted monopolies and "government support for technologies". I think they are subject to abuse and mistakes, and I think there has been problems with the system, but I don't support junking it completely.

Patents are the only type of government support for technology that I would accept. Obviously military technology receives government support. Also there are cases where technology is so far from being marketable that private companies won't develop it (say space technology in the 50s). But I do agree with your general principle. The government should not normally pick winners.
