To argue that a patent is a government subsidy would stretch the definition. In some ways it is true, but it is a reward to incent people to invent things that will profit them, thus incenting production, and result in a gain to humanity. Innovation driven economies outpace the growth of resource based economies.

I stand by the statement that government subsidies cause distortions that cause inefficiencies in markets. Markets price in the limited term of boon for innovation before the market incentive expires.

If you wish to believe that patents are a subsidy then feel free to add the exception to my statement of opinion.
