Its one thing to say "God made the apples red", its another to say "none of the apples will grow unless we sacrifice a virgin", and still another to actually go ahead and make the sacrifice.

Would asserting that God didn't make apples red be blasphemy to those who believe that God did? How about asserting that sacrificing a virgin isn't a good idea?

I was off tracking down some sashimi today while my mind pondered blasphemy. Say we have a religion called Atlas whose followers believe that Atlas holds up the earth. Saying it isn't so would be blasphemy. So NASA sends cameras into space, we get pictures of the earth and there's no Atlas. Should we not say so because it would be wrong to blaspheme?

If we spoke up, it would be hard on the Atlasians. They could reject our blasphemy out of hand--secular NASA conspiracy. Or they could keep their faith figuring that Atlas is just invisible. Or they could change faiths or despair and do themselves in. If they were the majority religion, they could defend their religion by building a theocracy and squash us.

Whatever the result, I can't imagine not challenging the idea that Atlas holds up the world.
