It's called helping the next quarter a little cause you know you aren't going to move 14 million iPods.

They're following the auto industry (not the best current example) when the model T came out in only black. As much as you or I don't think colors matter, they really do. It's a low cost, high return "feature", as long as it doesn't get out of hand.

Well put and I couldn't agree more. Anyone who doesn't think this is the case, why is it that you can choose among far more color/interior combinations on a car, with clothing, etc. than consumer electronics? Surely car companies don't *enjoy* the hassle of all this customization which makes no functional difference. To a typical technical person (i.e. the type of person who makes these decisions at tech companies), the response is 'bah! it makes no difference in how well it performs.' Well, neither does the paint job on a car... yet it does help sell them. Now give this information to someone with no sense of aesthetics and you'll get a brown lump ;-)

My client is a Mac convert of several years. Xserve is my recommendation and I'm willingly keeping any windows servers out of his environment. I may just go for a Sun server if Apple pulls out of this sector. I thought Xserve had already proved itself in the last 3 years but I'm starting to question Apple's intentions. Anyone that wants to buy one these days is SOL even for a G5 model!!! I'm puzzled.
