I completely agree with you on this; the GOP has really done the country a big disservice by rolling back so many reasonable energy efficiency programs, Clinton also did little unfortunately. We probably only get about 12% of our total oil from the middle east (but that is 20% of our oil imports) I assume we get another 8 to 10% of our total oil from Venezuela. We would need little of this if we were more efficient; by the way we use more than twice as much oil per capita than western europe.
