I'm with you on some sort of UNIVERSAL compulsary national service, whether it's being in the military, picking up trash on the roadside, or sitting with terminal children in cancer hospitals. But it should include pregnant high school dropouts as well as class valdictorians with scholarships to Yale. And that those who go into the military should be volunteers only, with at least a 3 year committment. If they aren't committed to the military, they should be cleaning pigon droppings off statues.

I lived through the "draft years" during WW 'Nam. The military has no need for those problems again.

"Quantify our military recruits by family income and education and I think you'll find that our military is VASTLY disproportionately made up of kids from low income and low education families."

And I say you know not whereof you speak.

That's why I say we should reinstitute the draft. You certainly wouldn't mind seeing every young person sign up and be responsible to their country..right?

Charlie? Charlie Rangel?

Is that you posting as RMF?

The draft is not off the table, but it is not currently necessary. We have excellent recruits who are proud to wear the uniform of their country.

Many of them are like my nephew. He was born of an upper middle class family. He was a straight A student. Then, he fell into the wrong crowd, and ended up dropping out. His father fired him. After failing out of community college he found the Marine recruiting station. He owns his own very profitable business now. I believe the Marine Corps saved his life. If you only heard part of his story, you might believe he was the kind of person that you believe is disproportionately represented.

Oh, and BTW Raytheon paid for his college degree, he graduated near the top of his class.
