Of course, anything "global" and "aid to governments" is fraught with potential scandalous disasters.

I think that a big reason this "Red" products movement has gotten so much significant support is because of the commitment to monitor and support only those spending efforts that prove to be successful (see sentence I bolded below.)

I think it's more that it doesn't cost these companies much, if anything, might help them make more money via the free and feel good publicity. Since the overall cause is good, I'm reluctantly positive about this particular effort. The broad support of these companies and celebrities combined with hopefully a strong management of the fund should help lots of people (though not nearly enough). It's sad to see good resources wasted, and there have been some high profile ones before like the fraudulent Tsunami victim and some Katrina relief efforts. Not saying there's any hint of that here, but have to remain constantly vigilant.

Like the points programs where you "earn" by spending, this donate by spending is likely to continue, but inherently, there seems to be something that just doesn't feel right about it.
