To be fair I think some folks adopted a mushy model(and somewhat cognitively dissonant) of "we had to get rid of Saddam AND we needed to make a bug zapper for terrorists AND we are bringing a new era of enlightenment and democracy to the ME". However odd those justifications are, some people on SI clearly believe them, and they are not clinically insane people. The real reasons for the way, imo, were that some Neocons in Washington really thought they could do a makeover on the ME (and have it come out the way they wanted it to). It was obviously hubris, and incorrect, but it was a "real" reason- it's just not a reason that plays very well to most folks in the US, though, especially now. jmo, of course
