"I don't think it's hubris to believe that people want to be free, they don't want to cower in fear of being murdered."

Unfortunately plenty of people in the other parts of the world do want to BE murderers, even if they don't want to be murdered, or they at least want to have murderers that are on their side in charge. Until that chances, nothing else will. And the Us invading in places it doesn't understand certainly isn't going to change things for the better. And freedom scares people- it even scares people in this country- which is why certain people long to give it up, and have the state makes us bow our heads, or tap our phones, or makes us pray in school. Many many people have problems with freedom- and not just in other countries. Freedom is scary, and it entails a lot of risk. I think you need to realize that, and for people who are used to repressive patriarchal societies (or who wish they lived in one), a "free society" might look just horrible.
