ASML Q3 profit beats forecasts, orders strong

AMSTERDAM, Oct 18 (Reuters) - Dutch electronic chip equipment maker ASML's third-quarter profit more than tripled, above analysts' forecasts on Wednesday, and it booked more orders than it expected thanks to strong demand for chips.

ASML, the world's largest maker of semiconductor lithography machines which map out electronic circuits on silicon wafers, booked a third-quarter net profit of 172 million euros ($215.6 million), which compared with the average forecast of 154 million euros given in a Reuters poll of 20 analysts and a year-ago profit of 48 million euros.

Closely-watched net bookings, which are an indicator of future sales and profits, rose to 95 machines, compared with 93 a quarter earlier and analysts' forecasts for 93.

Analysts are concerned that the volatile semiconductor sector is close to a peak and that investments in new machines may slow down. ASML sells more than 50 percent of all chip lithography machines measured in value.

ASML competes with Japan's Nikon Corp and Canon Inc and its customers include the world's largest chip maker Intel Corp and TSMC, the world's largest contract chip maker.
