Tim, we've already spent $500B in Iraq. Every month, we spend another $8-9B.

The cost (at least in financial terms) of getting entirely off oil in 15 years would make that figure seem tiny.

NONE OF THAT WOULD BE NECESSARY if the Middle East went back to being an impoverished desert with no oil money.

The idea that oil is going to cease being important to the world in the next decade or two is a fantasy.

Focusing on alternatives and making sure the US got the lion's share of the patents would pay for itself many times over.

Not in the 15 year time frame AS proposed. Quite the opposite, the cost would massively exceed the benefit.

Or are you beginning to believe oil independence is worth what we'd have to spend to get there?

Any serious attempt at "oil independence" within the next 15 years isn't worth what we would have to spend to get there. The attempt would be massively expensive, it would most likely be unsuccessful, and even if successful it would be less beneficial than you seem to think it would be.
