You obviously never heard the expression "Thank God for Mississippi", did you ?

Well then do enlighten us. How low do we have to sink for you to stop staying the course? Do we have to stoop below North Korea or do you have higher standards?

As for this freedom of speech rap - the fact that journalists have been jailed is by far not the main problem in the US.

The main problem is that our freedom of press and speech has been cynically and systematically exploited by Right Wing assholes in this country in the form of Fox Fictional News and that ilk. Journalists have not been jailed day in and day out, but the public is fed a line of bullshit by Murdoch and people like him every single day, in full legality. This stuff really began to hit its stride (as many of these things have) in the Raygun era, when he conveniently did away with the Fairness Doctrine in broadcasting. This cynical exploitation of "freedom of speech" has irreparably perverted our very election process, in a far more damaging way than any racist Florida voter fraud ever could.

If you want to know how the country could do something as stupid as electing a moron like Bush or invading Iraq, look to the abuse of the freedom of speech here, and not to a handful of journalists that have been jailed.
