There's a difference between the criticism itself and the freedom to criticize. Defending that freedom is an act of patriotism. Exercising the freedom to criticize, however, may or may not be patriotic depending on the nature of the criticism.

Burning the flag, for instance, might be permitted under free speech, but it is hardly patriotic. That's an extreme example, but one which illustrates my point.
