When Clancy came out with The Hunt for Red October, I was working at the ASWOC (AntiSubmarine warfare Operations Center) on NAS Brunswick. It was only a year or so before that the Gov't released information about the SOSUS net. That's an underwater string of hydrophones that stretch from Greenland to the UK. Before it was declassified, we couldn't even say SOSUS without getting in serious trouble. Anyway, HRO came out and the whole ASWOC read it and found it so accurate that some wanted Clancy investigated. Of course, much to some peoples chagrin, he did have support (and screening) from the Navy when he was writing the book....
