I think this is not going away. We haven't heard from the military itself or the families.

They won't.

I'd like to know where the 100 stories about Kerry are to the effect that he'll never admit when he's wrong. That's the persistent criticism and drumbeat about Bush.

Kerry was characterized as a "flip flopper" because he appeared to take contrary positions on a number of matters.

I think the truth about Kerry goes a little deeper and is illustrated by his handling of the current gaffe.

He should have simply apologized and moved forward. The remark was completely indefensible.

Instead, he lashed out at Republicans as though they were responsible for feeding him his lines. I guess it's similar to how they made him vote for the Iraq war.

The bottom line is that Kerry ALWAYS HAS TO BE RIGHT. He will not admit a mistake. If he makes a mistake, it's someone else's fault. In the case of the current comment, I think he expressed what he truly thinks about those in military service. That has to be why he didn't anticipate the fallout from such a remark. It fell off the tongue easily and had probably been uttered many times before in one form or another.

American Legion: Kerry "Should Apologize Now"

By Daniel McKivergan
WorldwideStandard.com

The nation's largest veterans organization, The American Legion, released the following statement a short time ago:

<<< American Legion to Sen. Kerry: Apologize Now

INDIANAPOLIS, October 31, 2006 - The National Commander of The American Legion called on Sen. John Kerry to apologize for suggesting that American troops in Iraq are uneducated.

“As a constituent of Senator Kerry’s I am disappointed. As leader of The American Legion, I am outraged,” said National Commander Paul A. Morin. “A generation ago, Sen. Kerry slandered his comrades in Vietnam by saying that they were rapists and murderers. It wasn’t true then and his warped view of today’s heroes isn’t true now.”

While addressing a group of college students at a campaign rally in Pasadena, CA., Monday, Kerry suggested that they receive an education or “if you don’t, you’ll get stuck in Iraq.”

“While The American Legion shares the senator’s appreciation for education, the troops in Iraq represent the most sophisticated, technologically superior military that the world has ever seen,” Morin said. “I think there is a thing or two that they could teach most college professors and campus elitists about the way the world works.

“And while we are on the topic of education, why doesn’t the senator and his comrades in Congress improve the GI Bill so all of today’s military members – reserves and guard included – can achieve the educational aspirations that the senator so highly values?” Morin said. “The senator’s false and outrageous attack was over-the-top and he should apologize now.” >>>

Vets for Freedom has also released a statement on Kerry's remarks.

>>When Virginia Sen. George Allen said "macaca" the Washington Post alone ran like 100 stories on it, many of them front page above the fold. Now that was a genuine case of much ado about nothing.

Wanna bet the MSM as a whole runs less than 100 original articles on this major gaffe by Kerry?<<

Sully -

Allen's repeated use of the word Macaca, and his comment "Welcome to America", left no room for doubt about his intentions.

In the case of the botched joke, clearly there is room for doubt. I see that a lot or Republicans think that Kerry meant to insult our troops. Clearly, it's to their political advantage to has his words interpreted in that way. I think it's unlikely that he meant to insult the troops, for the following reasons.

1 It's not in his self-interest: Most of you seem to think that Kerry always acts in his own self interest. So consider that Kerry would not gain anything from actually attacking the troops.

2 Context: When he was speaking, he was already on the subject of George Bush, and had already delivered several jokes about him. In this case, the only part of the joke that's missing is "... like George Bush."

It's just not plausible that Kerry really wanted to insult the troops. Doesn't make any political sense for him to do so.
