To us the NW passage is no different than then Mississippi system is to the US.

I completely disagree. It isn't the same as the Gulf of Sidra, but its closer to that than it is to the Mississippi or any other river. No part of any river is more than 12 nautical miles from the nearest land.

The more northerly claims, aren't really akin to 200 mile claims (except the claims about areas within 200 miles of Canada)
