From an academic point of view, give Bush, Jr. credit for defining the 50.x% partisan presidency in an emotionally charged era. With any luck, the forces of the universe won't come together to make that happen again for some decades to come.

That is, if people ever calm own a bit and get a grip again.

Do you believe the situation would have been very different if Kerry had won? If so, how? From the campaign, I could not see a significant difference between the two, though it is hard to believe Kerry would have been less competent than Bush.
