Very reckless, I'd go as far as amateurish on Flaherty's part... Unfortunately he was a finance minister in the Mike Harris provincial Tory government in Ontario... truly a gang that couldn't shoot straight if there ever was one in Canadian politics... as was sadly discovered when they finally lost...

Tony, Income trust distributions will be equivalent to dividends; so are you saying there is presently a hidden tax on dividends paid by the company issuing them? Because as far as I can tell I am not paying any tax on dividends right now. The dividend amount declared by the company is exactly what gets deposited in my tax-exempt account, and I don't need to pay any tax on it (until I eventually withdraw it, at which time I pay ordinary income tax).
