I understand why the cost of living would go up as the currency was inflated but why would it go up in relation to gold?


In my opinion, in a hyperinflation and economic mess that was that severe, there is nothing that's a perfect inflation hedge.

If I had to hazard a guess, I would say it has to do with the fact that you can't eat gold... So when things get really, really bad even gold losses value against necessities.
