Hello, thread. Saddam was sentenced to death by hanging today. You know, a year or two ago I would have said that the Republicans are honestly trying to do the right things, but in a misguided way. But with this announcement coming a couple days before elections, I have to say this absolutely stinks of politican machiavellianism.

Why the sentence this weekend, you may ask? It's the Republican ace in the hole. "Look at all the progress we're making in Iraq!", they will say. "We brought Saddam to justice," Bush will say.

If you don't think we pull the strings in Iraq, this is the clearest indicator yet. He's been on trial for 3 years and they just now, prior to a major, potentially power-shifting, Congressional elections cycle, sentence him to death.

It couldn't be clearer to me that the Republicans will use anything to hold onto power, because they've forgotten that they were elected to do good for the American people. Instead, it's now all about power and the retention of it.

Just sickening. Having said that, Saddam is getting what he deserves. So I'm not sorry to see that.
