I think you overstate Liberman's worth.

Liberman comes from a widely Democratic state. If he votes against the party, he can forget his career for good; he would not be able to run as Republican and CT's Democrats will not be as forgiving the second time around.

What is more, the "majority" that Dems can claim in the Senate is fairly hollow. They have at best 51 members, but they need 60 votes to pass bills. So who cares about the single vote that Liberman may provide.
