>> I am inclined to agree that the really devious stuff comes from the circle around Bush.

Oh God, pleez!! You have no idea in how many countries and about how many leaders (from right dictators to left dictators and everything in between) have I heard such a comment.

I think the late great Turkish writer Aziz Nassin said it best by pointing out that "Without a pond, water lilies never come to be" by which he meant corrupt leaders create the conditions for growth of their policies and seed them with the right appointments then hide behind plausible deniability.

I wondered how someone with a zero-sum view of the world would view today's results. Apparently it makes Apocalypse Now look like a junior high school field trip:

"To me, thats nothing but spin. Lets call a SPADE A SPADE, El Quiada and the Democrats WON THIS ELECTION. My hats off to the terrorists, they played the democratic voters like a piano. This war on Terror is now LOST IMHO, now all thats left is to SAVE OUR OWN BEHINDS. Goodbye, Iraq, Goodbye Middle East, Goodbye Pakistan, in 5 years Goodbye France, Goodbye Spain and maybe Goodbye Great Britian. All thats left now is to go to BUCHANON POLITICS and build FORTRESS AMERICA. The USA is no longer that shining beacon on the hill. jdn

My take about Rumsfeld resignation coming on the heels of the election rout was because of the criticisms from neocons like Richard Perle etc. I could agree, that the decision was accelerated by the election rout.

Someone, either on this thread or elsewhere on Si had suggested that Bush could have appointed Lieberman. since BUsh does not have a Democrat in his cabinet, I would say that could have tried to bring John Murtha on board and the Defence Secretary. It may be far-fetched idea, but for a office so powerful as the President of the US, he/she could have extended a olive branch as such and gotten away with it, even if that angered his base.

After all, he is a lame-duck and I would think he would be working towards a legacy in his final years instead of doing things to please his base.

I would also hope he would restrain his base from attacks bordering on hate against Nancy Pelosi and that Nancy would reciprocate likewise.

The final two years will be something I would watch with interest. The decision on Bolton is already encouraging for a start.

My most recent experience living in Europe (2002-2004 in Amsterdam) reminded me how much Europeans appreciate the difference between politics and people. While Bush is not welcome by many, I always felt a sense of hospitality wherever I went.

Having lived in Amsterdam as well, I have not always agreed with German politicians, but now I should make an exception.
