I would like to believe that the Iraq Study Group will produce something that will get wide support from both parties regarding Iraq.

If we exclude Iraq for a moment from the "war on terror", then there is probably more chance for common ground on the remaining issues offshore. Afghanistan, border security, use of police powers in conjunction with military force.

The grab will be domestic surveillance and other rights issues. As a thought....is it not possible to get some of these things done but with hard sunset provisions? And stronger judicial oversight? Wouldn't that give the democrats both of what they want?

I am of two minds on electronic surveilence. ....I used to be involved in some wiretapping in a prior life, and it was an interesting business to say the least. The sense of being able to know things you shouldn't know is very intoxicating...and it is hard to not want to use that information.
